Ever since we started Backpackinglight, we’ve wanted to design our own T-shirt. And believe me—I’ve tested many different versions over the years. Different materials, weights, and fits, but I never quite found the combination we were looking for.
A few years ago, I tested a thin merino-blend T-shirt weighing 140 gsm. It was far from perfect—a little too short at the waist and with significantly more print than I really wanted—but the material was fantastic. It kept me warm when needed, breathed well, dried quickly, and above all: it lasted. Year after year.
That was the starting point for the Hike Tee.
With the Hike Tee, we wanted to create a T-shirt that was as functional as possible without looking overly technical. A T-shirt for long days on the trail, travel, and outdoor adventures—but one that’s also clean and polished enough to be a favorite even on a completely ordinary day at work.
The result is a minimalist black T-shirt without unnecessary details, made from Trekblend—50% certified merino wool and 50% recycled polyester.
The merino wool provides softness, warmth, and temperature regulation, while the polyester adds durability, faster drying time, and makes the garment easier to care for over time. This combination creates a garment that performs just as well when the pace picks up as when the temperature drops.
One thing was especially important to us: the Hike Tee couldn’t be too short.
That’s why we’ve made it slightly longer than a regular T-shirt. This ensures it fits well even on taller people and provides better coverage when you’re moving, hiking, or carrying a backpack.
The fit is neither tight nor baggy. It’s relaxed enough to allow for ventilation and freedom of movement, yet snug enough to feel put-together. The idea is simply that it should fit like your favorite T-shirt—but be versatile enough for so much more.
Merino is often associated with gentle hand washing, but we wanted to create a garment that actually works for everyday use. Our own merino blends have held up through years of use and machine washing at low temperatures. As with all merino garments, we recommend gentle washing for the longest possible lifespan.
The Hike Tee is launching first in black. More colors are coming soon, but the core concept won’t change: clean design, excellent functionality, and a garment you’ll want to wear again and again.
