PRIMUS WINTER GAS

Primus developed Winter Gas to increase the performance of gas stoves at lower temperatures. Low temperatures reduce the pressure in the gas tank and the liquid gas evaporates more slowly. This results in the stove burning at a lower output or not at all, even though there may be gas left in the tank. The main innovation behind Primus Winter Gas' improved performance in cold weather is VaporMesh. VaporMesh is a highly absorbent paper that wraps around the entire inside of the tank, increasing the surface area from which the liquid fuel evaporates into gaseous form. This helps to keep the pressure higher, allowing the stove to burn better. The increased surface area also speeds up the liquid-to-gas process and it is this speed that determines the pressure inside the container. Fast process = high pressure.

Compared to conventional gas containers, this is what makes Winter Gas perform reliably even in cold conditions where gas was previously not possible.

MORE CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE
Here's how Winter Gas maintains a more consistent performance.

1. EXPANDED SURFACE = INCREASED PRESSURE

The phase transition occurs from both paper and surface instead of only the surface of the container as in a conventional gas container. This expands the surface without requiring a larger container. This increases the pressure in the gas container.

2. REDUCED BOILING TIME

Thanks to the VaporMesh paper and gas mixture, the phase transition from liquid to gas is faster. The burner gets more fuel, which means that the boiling time at very low temperatures is shorter compared to other gas canisters.

3. VAPORMESH™

A type of paper that lines the inside of the container and absorbs the gas in its liquid form. The effectiveness of the VaporMesh paper increases as the fuel level decreases and the gas performs more consistently over the life of the canister.

4. LIQUID GAS
The mixture of propane and isobutane gas is the same as Power Gas: approximately 20% propane and 80% isobutane.

When comparing two brand new and full gas cylinders (Power Gas and Winter Gas), the difference is not so noticeable at first as the pressure is high in both cylinders, but the more gas consumed from the cylinders the more obvious the difference becomes. When gas containers without VaporMesh are used in cold conditions, the pressure in the container decreases due to the cold, causing the stove to burn at lower power or not at all. This becomes more apparent when the canister is no longer full. After 60 minutes of cooking, Primus Winter Gas is about 9% more powerful than a gas canister without VaporMesh. After 120 minutes of use, it delivers about 15% more power.

See table from a comparison test between a full canister of Power Gas and a full canister of Winter Gas, conducted in a freezer at a constant temperature of -20°C. Both gas containers were left in a freezer for 48 hours before the test was carried out to better reflect a real situation when you are out for several days. The test used two Primus Spider Stoves and an infrared thermometer with a laser viewer.

AWARDS

The year that Winter Gas was launched on the market, it won the Outdoor Industry Award GOLD MEDAL at the OutDoor trade fair in 2014. For proof of innovation and drive in combustion and heating. The award is considered one of the most prestigious awards worldwide - with only seven gold winners in total in 2014. The gas also won the Outdoor Trade Show 2014 in the 'Camping Equipment' and 'Product of the Year' categories. The Outdoor Trade Show is the UK's largest outdoor trade show. In 2015, Winter Gas won another award: "Editors' Choice" by the German magazine Outdoor.
