The patented Notch is our lightest non-Dyneema double-wall shelter. This tent is ideal for hikers who use trekking poles and want extra protection against condensation without adding excessive weight. Our Thoughts

The Tarptent Notch is a solo tent and a 3-season Silnylon tent. I’ve used it in all kinds of weather year-round. It has withstood gusty storms, snow, winter temperatures as low as minus 13 ℃, heavy rain, and hot summer weather.

Seam Sealing

It is recommended to seal the seams with a silicone-based seam sealer before use. After sealing the seams, the weight totaled 836 grams, which includes the Partial Solid inner tent + two apex guy lines for tensioning the tent. This weight does not include tent poles.

Setup

The Notch is very easy to set up. It only takes a couple of minutes to do so. I attached my hiking poles anywhere between 110–115 cm. The Notch packs down into a long, sausage-shaped bundle. This shape can be a bit tricky to pack sometimes. If I’m using my smaller HMG Windrider 2400 backpack, I attach it to the lid.

Pros

• It’s narrow and the size is excellent for setting up in those small, awkward spots where a slightly larger tent can’t be pitched
• At 836 grams, the Notch is an acceptably lightweight tent (weight after seam sealing)
• Easy to get in and out from both sides
• Very simple and quick to set up
• Not expensive
• With an interior height of 109 cm, there’s plenty of room to sit up

Cons

• You can leave the doors open in light rain, but there isn’t much space between the outer tent and the inner tent, so be careful not to let rain get into the inner tent 
• If the wet vestibules come into contact with the inner tent—which sometimes happens when I’m leaving the tent—water splashes can get into the inner tent.

The solid interior (which features two-thirds solid walls, one-third mesh walls, and solid roof panels) blocks horizontally blowing wind, sand, snow, and rain. It makes the tent up to 8 degrees F warmer in calm conditions.
