Durston X-Mid 1 Solid

Note: This is the updated model.

The X-Mid 1 Solid is a variant of the X-Mid 1, specifically designed for use in colder conditions, including winter use and trekking in windswept areas such as northern Europe and Patagonia. Despite this, it remains an excellent tent for general backpacking use. The tent has a stronger fabric ( 20D ) than the X-mid 1 with mesh (whose new fabric is 15D). The Solid is based on the X-Mid 1, which has been developed from the ground up with a focus on geometry to create the most weight-optimized, simple and storm-resistant design for a tent using trekking poles. The result is a tent that weighs only 890g while being incredibly storm-resistant, user-friendly and spacious. As a very well-balanced tent, the X-Mid 1 has become one of the most awarded tents in recent years, with awards such as Best Tent from The Trek, Outdoor GearLab and Section Hiker.

What's new on the 2025 model?

More specifically, Durston has made two changes to the Solid tent.

  • High-precision narrow seams with narrow seam tape to save weight
  • Made the volume of the tent larger In the third generation, Durston has further increased the interior space by making the tent:

2" (5 cm) wider → Total 33" (84 cm)
3" (8 cm) longer → Total 93" (236 cm)
2" (5 cm) higher for more headroom

In addition, we've added short braces to two corners of the floor to further increase usable space. With these updates, the X-Mid 1 is now more generously sized to make it more comfortable to wait out rough weather.

Best of all? We've managed to do this while actually reducing the tent's footprint.

STORM RESISTANT
Many ultralight tents are designed for mild weather conditions and therefore make huge sacrifices in storm resistance in the quest to save weight. This often means questionably thin fabrics, weak poles, thin coatings that are barely waterproof, and the removal of vents, storm lines and even parts of the outer tent. With the X-Mid, the focus is on creating a tent that is ultra-lightweight while still being able to withstand tough conditions. To create a tent that is both lightweight and capable, we save weight through efficient design with our X-Mid geometry that utilizes fabric and structural elements more effectively. The result is a tent that excels in tough conditions, with its fly-first setup, full double-wall construction, non-sag polyester fabric, rugged coatings, large adjustable vents, factory-sealed seams, a full-coverage outer tent (which prevents rain splash and drafts), storm-resistant shape, durable #5 zippers, and protected entrances that keep rain out. No other tent can claim to have all these features. It is one of the lightest double-wall tents on the market, while having the storm resistance of much heavier tents.

USER-FRIENDLY

Simplicity and ease of use are the focus of the X-Mid, because the last thing you want when a storm is approaching is a tent that's complicated to use. The X-Mid enhances this experience with a design rooted in simplicity and refined by our extensive wilderness experience and meticulous attention to detail.

Ease of use starts with the X-Mid's ultra-simple setup with just four tent pegs, no mandatory storm lines, no weird angles to appreciate and no need to measure anything. With a little practice, the tent can be set up in less than a minute with just four required tent pegs and two tent poles that can be extended without the need to measure.

Once the tent is set up, the simplicity continues with large doorways that are not blocked by tent poles, spacious vestibules that place the main surface next to the door instead of blocking it, magnetic door fasteners that are quick to use, intuitive pockets and easy-to-use one-handed zippers.

SPACIOUS

The X-Mid geometry is the most space-efficient way to use two tent poles. This is achieved by using a diagonal roofline and a diagonal floor, which allows the two poles to be placed further apart for increased headroom and volume.

The result is a well-sized 1-person tent with plenty of headroom along the entire length of the tent, allowing you to sit up anywhere and move easily from lying to sitting without bumping into the walls.

We recommend the X-Mid 1 Solid for hikers up to 193 cm (6'4") thanks to its generous length of 230 cm (90") and steep end walls that increase the usable length. The floor width is a comfortable 81 cm (32"), which will fit any sleeping pad with room to spare, while the double vestibules are generously sized and will easily accommodate the largest backpack next to the doorway.

QUALITY

Our focus on creating a highly functional and storm-resistant tent also means that we place great emphasis on quality. It's crucial that you can rely on your tent when you head out into uncertain conditions.

To achieve this, the X-Mid 1 Solid is made by the most experienced tent factory in the world, which has been building tents for over 60 years. Our tents are assembled with premium materials, double stitching, double folded edges and generous reinforcement at vulnerable points.

We know of no other tent with trekking poles that uses double stitching to the same extent as we do. While this premium quality gives X-Mid a higher production cost than comparable tents, we keep the price affordable by selling directly to you without middlemen and with only a modest margin.

Optimal Geometry
The patented X-Mid geometry with staggered tent poles provides excellent storm resistance and easy pitching with less weight than any other geometry.

Spacious
The diagonal (staggered) roofline increases headroom and interior volume compared to other double pole tents.

Fabric that does not sag
X-Mid has pioneered lightweight polyester because it doesn't absorb water and bag like nylon, allowing the tent to retain its structural integrity in wet conditions. Our passion for polyester was initially met with resistance from many established companies using nylon, but has since led to polyester now being recognized as a better material and many competitors following our lead.
