OUR THOUGHTS:
I have been using the Thermarest xTherm now for almost 6 years on various trips in the summer, winter and everything in between. It has more or less been my real go-to sleeping pad as it keeps me warm and comfortable regardless of the temperature. I personally use the large/wide size because I am both wide and tall. I also like to sleep on my side, so I let some air out of the mattress to help it mold better to my body.
The secret to getting a comfortable night's sleep is to fully inflate the bed base and then let some air out so your shoulders and hips sink a little. I also like to position myself on a slight downward slope and if it's tight so I can dig out some space right where my hips will be, I really maximize my comfort level.
In the six years that I've been using the xTherm, I've only had to repair it once and then I had slept with camera batteries that happened to pierce the top of the sleeping pad. But it was quickly fixed! That being said, I can recommend the xTherm very highly because of its durability.
Therm-a-rest xTherm is clearly the warmest I have tried in relation to its weight. In size large/wide it weighs only 650 grams and keeps you warm down to - 40 degrees or more. On winter trips I can put my xTherm directly on a snowy surface without any problems. When it was launched it was the most comfortable model on the market, but now there may be more comfortable models but the xTherm is still the warmest and lightest.
