Skalmo Octa Zip Hoodie
The Skalmo Octa Zip Hoodie is an ultralight and breathable midlayer designed for active outdoor pursuits. The combination of low weight, effective insulation, and excellent breathability makes it a versatile mid-layer for everything from fast summit hikes to long hikes in the mountains.
The long zipper makes it easy to regulate your temperature as your activity level changes. Unzip it when the pace picks up and zip it back up when the wind picks up or when you stop for a break. The Skalmo Octa Zip Hoodie is available in two thicknesses: Octa 50 and Octa 80.
Octa 50
The lightest option for high-intensity activity, milder temperatures, and maximum ventilation. Ideal as a thin mid-layer or as a very lightweight layering piece during spring, summer, and early fall.
Octa 80
A slightly warmer version that offers more insulation while still being very lightweight and highly breathable. A great choice for cooler conditions, longer breaks, and activities where you want a little more warmth.
My Personal Thoughts
During my hike in the Hattfjelldalsfjällen mountains, I used both the Octa 50 and the Octa 80, and they really impressed me. For me, this is a garment that works just as well as a lightweight mid-layer on cooler days as it does as a breathable outer layer when the pace picks up. My personal favorite turned out to be the Octa 50. Its light weight, combined with the long zipper, provided ventilation that I used frequently on the uphills, and I could easily regulate my temperature without having to take the garment off.
Compared to Alpha Direct, the Octa fabric is slightly less breathable, but I still found that the Octa 50, with its thin and open weave, offered a very good balance between warmth and ventilation. At the same time, Octa feels more durable, holds its shape better, and is significantly less likely to get snagged on branches and bushes. For me, it became a garment I wore from morning to night—whether I was hiking, taking a break, or setting up camp.
