Hyperlite Mountain Gear Windrider 40 is an ultralight backpack developed for long tours where light weight, durability and function go hand in hand. With a pack volume of 40 liters plus 11.5 liters of external storage, you get plenty of space for both basic equipment and easily accessible packing.
The backpack is made of updated Dyneema® Woven Composite 3.9, a material that combines very low weight with high durability and excellent resistance to abrasion - a clear upgrade from previous generations. The open mesh pocket provides extra ventilation and quick access to equipment.
With a total weight of approximately 840 grams and a carrying capacity up to 18 kg (40 lbs), the Windrider 40 is a reliable choice for thru-hiking, mountaineering and other longer adventures where every gram counts.
Thoughtful design for comfort and stability
The Windrider series is built to carry light - but also comfortably when days get long and packs get heavy.
The roll-top closure with vertical compression straps makes it easy to adjust the volume to suit your pack, keeping the contents compact, stable and protected from the weather. The top Y-strap provides extra compression and the possibility to attach equipment on top of the bag.
The back panel is integrated and consists of a 6 mm (1/4") foam plate that provides light cushioning and structure for a comfortable carry. Larger models use a more advanced construction with double-density foam and plastic reinforcement for increased stability under heavier loads.
The hip belt is constructed from double density foam with breathable mesh, providing a good balance of comfort, support and light weight - especially on longer rides with a full pack.

On my eleven-day hike through Sarek, it rained for two days straight and I had waded through waist-deep water daily. I didn't use rain covers or anything like that so I relied on the backpack to keep things dry. I pack everything in waterproof bags and use a large garbage bag as a pack liner on the inside to keep as much water out as possible. In my experience, this combination keeps everything completely dry, no matter how it rains or if I wade in water - and this was the case even this time in Sarek.
There are many backpacks on the market - but there is a reason why HMG packs have grown in popularity. There are no backpacks that come close to the quality of the robust models from HMG. If you need a backpack that can handle the most, then a Hyperlite Mountain Gear Windrider 4400 or one of the other 4400 models is the right choice for you!
