Best backpacks for women - how to choose the right fit

Choosing the right backpack is one of the most important parts of a long hike.

But here's something we've learned after helping many long-distance walkers - including Green Belt walkers:

  • Women don't choose backpacks by gender
    They choose by fit

The biggest misconception

Many people think that "women's models" are always the right choice.

But in practice, we see many women using the same backpacks as men:

  • Hyperlite Mountain Gear (HMG)

  • Durston Kakwa

  • Gossamer Gear Mariposa

It's not what the bag is labeled as -
but how it fits on your body.

What actually matters

1. back length - most important of all

The most important thing when choosing a backpack is:

The right back length.

If the size is wrong:

  • The weight is wrong

  • Shoulder pressure increases

  • Comfort disappears quickly

Nothing else can compensate for this.

2. The shape of the shoulder straps

For many women, this is crucial.

Look for S-shaped shoulder straps

Those:

  • Follow the body better

  • Goes down faster under the arm

  • Reduces pressure across the chest

It can make a huge difference over several days in the mountains.

Model that often works very well

Osprey Eja

A backpack that is often appreciated by women is:

Osprey Eja

  • Clearly S-shaped shoulder straps

  • Very good carrying system

  • Adapted for women's body

One of the best choices if fit is top priority: Read more about Eja here

What we see in reality

In our data from long-distance hikers, we clearly see that women often choose:

These are not specific women's models -
but they perform very well thanks to:

  • Low weight

  • Multiple sizes

  • S-shaped shoulder straps.

Different bodies - different choices

Do you have more shapes (e.g. bust)?

Then it is extra important:

  • S-shaped shoulder straps

  • Softer harness

  • Adjustable chest strap

Example:

  • Osprey Eja

  • Specific models with distinct S-shaped shoulder straps

Do you have a more "straight" body shape?

Then more models work well.

You are less limited in choice

Manufacturers are adapting

We also see how developments are moving forward.

Example: Hyperlite Mountain Gear

Over the past year, HMG has:

  • Increased the S-curve in the shoulder straps

  • Improved the fit
