Durston X-Dome 1

DURSTON X DOME 1

These tents are the updated 2026 model with a more durable floor fabric, included storm ropes and several other improvements.

The X-Dome™ 1+ is a spacious one-man freestanding tent, combining our unique X-Mid floor plan with an extremely weight- and strength-optimized pole design to create an ultralight freestanding tent with outstanding storm resistance, spaciousness and simplicity. Weighing only 35 oz (985 g with carbon poles), the X-Dome 1+ is one of the lightest fully freestanding two-wall tents in the world, while being significantly more spacious, several times stronger and more user-friendly than comparable tents. It is the perfect shelter for any solo hiker who prefers a freestanding tent.

We initially offer the Durston X-Dome 1+ in two versions: a lighter mesh inner (1085g) for maximum ventilation and low weight, and a solid inner (1135g) for better protection in colder and more exposed conditions. Both variants come with aluminum poles for added durability and stability.

STORM RESISTANT

The patented X-Dome 1+ achieves outstanding strength-to-weight ratio thanks to its unique geometry, use of carbon fiber tubes, durable silpoly fabric and a pole design that optimizes structural efficiency with larger diameter tubes in the back section. The result is an extremely capable shelter with three times the durability of many other ultralight tents.

Although it will likely never be needed, the X-Dome has the ability to be supplemented with trekking poles to turn the cross pole into a sturdy extra arch, providing four-season strength. The poles are placed in a unique counterbalanced position that directly supports the sidewalls from bending inwards and provides remarkable stability against wind and large amounts of snow.

While the sheer strength of the X-Dome 1+ is impressive, what matters most to us is its 'practical storm resistance' - how livable the tent is in difficult conditions. Here, the X-Dome excels with an overhanging doorway (to keep the rain out), natural fly-first assembly (to keep the inside dry during setup in the rain), 100% polyester fabric (which doesn't sag and dries quickly), double large vents at the top (to minimize condensation), and double wall protection. No other ultralight freestanding tent can hold its own with this list. Plus, there's a spacious interior and vestibule to comfortably ride out the storm, a roof that protects the vestibule even when both doors are open, and an outer tent that goes low to the ground to block drafts and rain splash.

SPACIOUS

The X-Dome 1+ is a spacious one-man tent with a large floor area, excellent headroom, generous length and a roomy vestibule. It can accommodate one person with plenty of room to spare and can even fit two adults in tight situations.

The floor plan is based on the unique parallelogram design of our X-Mid tents, but with an extended floor that fills out the rear vestibule, providing a full 2.15 m² (23 square feet) of space. The floor widens to a luxurious 1.3 meters at the head end, and the length is 85 inches (215 cm) when lying straight. Tall travelers can lie diagonally to get a full 90 inches (229 cm) of length - and all this space is fully usable thanks to the steep side walls.

Interior volume and headroom are increased by the variable radius arch system, which steepens the side walls to maximize space. A crossbar extends the roof height over a larger part of the interior. With an interior height of 1.1 meters (42 inches), 8-13 cm higher than similar tents, the headroom is generous and extends over a larger part of the tent. Even on a thick sleeping pad, you can sit upright anywhere.

Finally, the vestibule is conveniently located next to the main door (instead of blocking it as in most tents) and has a generous size of 0.85 m² (9.2 square feet), easily accommodating the largest backpacks with extra space for cooking, shoes and wet clothes.

SIMPLICITY

Simplicity is a key priority in our tents, because when you're tired after a long day or when bad weather is approaching, you want a tent that's quick and easy to use.

It starts with the set-up, where the outer, inner and poles are attached at the same four points, so you can pitch the tent in any order you like. You can start with the outer tent to keep the inner tent dry during rain, or pitch the inner tent first for stargazing on clear nights. The X-Dome can be set up with the outer and inner tents separately or pre-connected to save time. It's also 100% self-contained, requiring no pegs, ropes or stakes (although you should always anchor your tent, with the X-Dome you can let the weather conditions determine which are needed).

Another key feature is the doors, which have a crossbar to increase height and an angled zipper to widen the opening - providing an oversized door for easy access. The smaller side of the door can be secured with a tent peg or trekking pole to protect the vestibule, or rolled back to fully open the tent. All doors attach easily with magnets, and the unique floor plan makes it easy to reach to close the front door.

The X-Dome also enhances your experience with quick-drying polyester that won't sag, a fully interlocking pole system (no loose parts to lose or step on), internal hanging loops, dual pockets, and a compact footprint that fits in any tent site.

QUALITY

Beyond its high-performance design, the X-Dome offers exceptional quality. This starts with premium materials, including Easton carbon fiber poles, which are significantly more expensive than aluminum poles but provide much higher strength-to-weight ratios. Durston has long been a leader in the development of polyester for lightweight tents, and with X-Dome we are introducing a next-generation high-strength silpoly, which provides outstanding strength-to-weight ratio. This high-performance silpoly allows us to create a lighter 15D silpoly that has equivalent or higher strength than most 20D silpoly fabrics.

We use these materials and manufacture the X-Dome in one of the world's most experienced premium tent factories. We use advanced construction methods such as high-precision narrow seams, narrow taping of the seams, watertight seams, generous double stitching, abundant bartacking reinforcement and double folded edges.

All in all, the X-Dome 1+ is a truly special freestanding tent. Weighing around 1 kg, it is one of the lightest two-wall freestanding tents on the market, while being more spacious, storm-resistant and user-friendly than comparable tents. It protects with its fly-first setup and robust construction, comfortably accommodates with market-leading internal volume and floor space, and is easy to use with large doorways and the ability to pitch without pegs. From Torres del Paine to Te Araroa, the X-Dome 1+ is the perfect freestanding tent for any adventure.

Optimal Geometry
Our patented X-Dome geometry combines the unique X-Mid floor plan with a free-standing pole construction to create a spacious tent with a large vestibule, all enclosed in a simpler and lighter rectangular outer tent. This rectangular outer tent offers greater strength, greater simplicity and a 100% free-standing setup without the need for pegs, all at a lower weight.

Spacious
The X-Dome 1+ is an extremely spacious one-man tent with a floor big enough to store luggage and even a dog inside, and it can even accommodate two adults in tighter situations. The market-leading 42" (107 cm) ceiling height extends over a large part of the tent, while the steep side walls provide excellent length.

Trekking pole support
Hiking poles can be optionally added to turn the cross pole into an extra strong arch, giving the tent strength for all seasons. Uniquely, these pole supports are balanced to directly support the side walls, increasing the vertical and horizontal stability of the tent.

Polyester fabric that won't sag
Our tents have pioneered the use of polyester in lightweight tents because polyester does not absorb water and sag like nylon, allowing the tent to dry quickly and retain its structural integrity in wet conditions. Since 2018, we've been championing polyester, and now we're introducing a new generation of high-strength polyester that offers outstanding strength-to-weight ratio.

Large door opening
The door is very large thanks to the crossbar that increases the height and an angled zipper that widens the opening. The overhanging design protects the door from rain and creates a shelter over the apse even if both doors are open.

Spacious Apse
The X-Dome 1+ has a spacious and high vestibule, strategically placed next to the door instead of blocking it. The apse has plenty of room for large backpacks and other equipment.

Double Walls
Separate outer and inner tents prevent condensation, and the different components can be used modularly for flexibility depending on the weather.

Double vents
The adjustable vents on the top of the tent minimize condensation while being able to close in harsh weather conditions.

Optional guy lines
The X-Dome offers many attachment points for guy lines, including at corners, vents and cross pole ends, with up to 17 attachments in total for maximum protection in tough conditions. Guy lines are included.

Versatile Set Up
The unique design allows pitching in any order. The outer tent can be pitched first to protect against rain, or the inner tent can be pitched first for stargazing.

Fully enclosed outer tent
The outer tent extends far down to the ground to block drafts and rain splashes.

Magnetic Door Holders
Magnetic fasteners make it easy to open and close the doors with one hand.

Double Pockets
The tent has two internal top pockets and four hanging loops for maximum storage and flexibility.

Fully waterproof seams
Seams are factory sealed to eliminate the need for user sealing.

Is it a tent for tall people?

If you sleep "straight" along the back wall of the X-Dome 1+, the length is 85 inches (216 cm), and thanks to the steep end walls, almost all of that surface is usable. This makes the length average for a tent and should work for people up to about 190 cm

However, the unique trapezoid-shaped floor makes it possible to sleep diagonally (as in our X-Mid series), which adds 5 inches of extra length, resulting in an impressive length of about 90 inches (229 cm). We recommend the tent for people up to 6'6"(198 cm) when sleeping diagonally, but the actual maximum length may vary depending on individual factors such as sleeping bag size, how straight you sleep and how much space you expect.
